Adjustment to and cooperation with others works on the premise that we are all social beings and that as such we have relationships. This problem statement is considered first and therefore the most important because it affects all other statements in some fashion. The problem with human relationships is obvious to anyone who has ever had one is that they involve human beings. That may sound simplistic bordering on pessimistic, but it takes every kind of people to make up the world and people can be unpredictable.
People come into contact with others moving outward through concentric circles towards relationships which present unique situations and problems. Close to the individual are satisfactory relations with family. How can fairness and harmony be achieved with each member of the family? How does one move from that nuclear unit and start his own family? Stable family home relationships and safe secure home situations are recognized now as an integral part of a student’s successful learning. In the next ring, how does one build up satisfactory relationships within an occupation; with one’s fellow workers, superiors or subordinates? In trying to establish a sense of fairness of opportunity for all, it depends on where you are in the order of things and the relationships of power inherit in the job. Relationships in the community are important because they depend upon the agreed values and morals of the community. How does one contribute to the community, to become part of the collective and yet not get caught up in the petty discord that always seems to be present? And finally, there are relationships in social settings which can be part of or separate from that described above, having to do with making and maintaining friendships.
