Guiding principles and ultimate values are the philosophical faces of man. What is the group willing to work for, willing to sacrifice for?  The development by the individual and by extension, the group of a point of view about life dictates the social direction of that individual or group.  Within this problem area is the heady topic of religion.  It is naïve to think that problems regarding religion can be readily solved, but they can be understood.  Alexander knew that human belief was too big a beast to bring to the floor in such a forum and all one can hope to do is understand with sensitivity to those enduring values and respect to the willingness to act in keeping with them.
